“May the odds be ever in your favor!”
So there’s this movie that came out this weekend. I’ve even heard it’s based on a book or three. “The Starvation Activities,” I think… right? (Synonyms provided by my boys, by the way.)
…
Nah, it’s The Hunger Games!
Actually, I did read the books, after hearing about them for so long. And once I did, then I campaigned all of my closest friends to read them as well. Only some of them did, and the rest I’m “unfriending” shortly. π
Soooooo, that meant that I needed to share these cookies with the world, where I could find even more “Hunger Games Diehards” like myself! And like my “Breaking Dawn” cookies, I wanted to share them with the fans at the movie theatre, too!
I had tickets to the midnight premiere on Thursday evening/Friday morning, and it was such a great time! I love the midnight premieres for big “fandom” movies. The crowd is usually super-quiet, as every is a big fan & wants to hear every word. They laugh at all the right moments, and they cry right along with me in the sad parts, too. In my opinion, midnight shows are a MUST!
Those of us who read the books looked toward the movie’s opening as our own personal “Reaping Day.” For me, I was really excited for the 74th Annual Hunger Games!
I think I’ll just get right to more pictures. You don’t mind, do you? I figure you came here for the cookies. π
The book opens with an explanation of the Districts, and you learn right away that our main characters – Katniss, Peeta, and Gale – are all from District 12, the district focused on mining:
But there are so many other districts, too. See?
And there’s the Capitol, which controls the entirety of Panem & keeps the other districts in their place. Each year, the Capitol forces the districts to offer up tributes – one boy & one girl – to fight in the Hunger Games.
And that’s where we see Katniss & Peeta in action. β₯
But I want to show you close-ups of those cookies, ‘cuz I really like ’em!
And then there’s Katniss’ famous mockingjay pin, too.
I made each of the mockingjays from the three books to match. The Hunger Games is gold on black, Catching Fire is bronze on red, and Mockingjay is dusted blue-white on blue.
And then Peeta’s heartwrenching phrase from the final book:
*sigh*
For the first time I can remember in a fandom, I didn’t “ship” a couple. For example, I wasn’t pulling for Katniss to end up with either Gale or Peeta. For me, the books just never felt like a love story (ie. Twilight), so it wasn’t ever about that for me. I’m glad that the movie doesn’t focus much on the love triangle much either.
I’m a bit sad that it’s over for now. I plan to see the movie a second time VERY soon, but the next movie isn’t slated to hit theaters until Thanksgiving 2013. I suppose the bright side is that I have a lot of time to plan cookies, huh?
Speaking of planning, I have to admit that the “Katniss, Girl on Fire” cookie didn’t end up how I had originally dreamt it. I iced square cookies in both white & black, not sure which setting would give the flames more “pop!” I intended to use gel color to simply paint the flames on, and that’s how I see it in my head. However, as my decorating night came to an end, I had a bit of leftover red & yellow icing, and I couldn’t bear to waste it.
They were different consistencies (red = flood, yellow = piping), but I think the effect turned out pretty neat. I definitely prefer the black cookie version, but I will concede that I would rather actually EAT the white cookie version. π
Also, I’ve got lots more cookie photos (as well as close-ups of the different Districts!) over HERE. Check ’em out! β₯

Would you believe I still have no clue what the Hunger Games is all about!? Love these cookies though! So detailed! Amazing!
Oh Cathy, it’s a great book series, and in this case, movie! Thank you for chiming in! π
Wow, those cookies are AMAZING!! You are VERY talented.
THANK YOU for coming over to check ’em out! I’m so very honored to have you on my site, as I love reading you each night! π
Nicole I am blown away by both the exacting detail on these cookies and the amount that you made and decorated. The are beautiful and your Girl on Fire ones…the effect is wonderful.
Thank you, Paula! I really enjoyed making these as a fan, and I think my personal favorite is the “Girl on Fire” ones, too. π
I love the Hunger Games and I LOOOOOOVE these! I could see this being delivered in a shiny silver parachute to some lucky tribute π
Thank you, Lia! Oh, a parachute delivery would’ve been perfect, too! I intended to make silver parachute cookies, but then I completely spaced on them when baking my shapes. Perhaps I’ll get them done for the next movie. π
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these!!!!!! Loved the books, loved the movie…LOVE these cookies!!!!
Thank you, Vanessa! I’m glad you loved them! π
The only thing missing is a Gale cookie!!! (if there were teams, I’d be team Gale)
I ran out of time for a few designs, but I was also having trouble coming up with a good cookie for Gale, too. He doesn’t have a good slogan, you know?
Just bought the first book to read before I see the movie. These are STUNNING! Truly, beautiful work!
Thank you, Kelly! I hope you have enjoyed the book by now. They were all real page-turners, and I couldn’t read them fast enough!
Nicole these are simply stunning!! What amazing work!! I wish I would have had some with me at the movies π
Thank you, Kristina! I sure would’ve shared with you at the theater if it were possible! π
Your cookies are amazing. AMAZING. How do you do that fine detail work? I don’t think I’d have the patience for it!! And the words – everything is so clean. How could you stand to eat them?? I’d want to preserve them somehow! Very beautiful!!
Thank you, Jessica! You are too sweet, and I’m glad that you love the cookies so very much – they were definitely a labor of love for this fan. π
These are so amazing!!! Everything about them is perfect! I have not seen the movie yet but these make me want to go tonight! I see why they are one of your favorite and thanks for adding them to my Link Party:)
Thank you, Lisa! I hope you’ve gotten a chance to catch the movie by now, too! π
HOLY COW these are amazing!!! I am in utter awe!!
Thank you so much, Glory!
Wow these cookies are amazing. I am looking for favors for a hunger games themed birthday party and these would be perfect. Could you send me an email on pricing and the options for wrapping them individually?
Hi Patricia! I sent you an email. π
Guess how many times i read the books?16!!!!! I love them so much! I should post a pic of MY SUPER EASY hunger games nails!
Grace, I haven’t read them as much as you, but I’m definitely a fan! I can’t wait to make more cookies for the second movie, too! π
WOW! Nicole these are incredible.
I have a question… how do you get the “fonts” so perfect, especially on black icing? Are you free handing or using a projector? If a projector… how to project a visible image on black icing?
